The Elder Futhark introductionit rep
The Elder Futhark is a group of 24 runes, used for writing, divination and magic in Norse traditions. Often times you till see the divided into three groups, each one called an Ætt.
The first Ætt, is known as Freyr's or Freyja's Ætt. In consists of the following 8 runes.
Fehu: fehu represents the letter F. it is also symbolic of wealth and domesticated cattle, which were also a symbol of having wealth in ancient Germanic civilizations.
Uruz: Uruz represents the letter U. It is symbolic of an Auroch, which were wild oxen that eventually became the cattle that Germanic societies relied heavily on. Therefore Uruz also represents untamed strength and potential
Thurisaz: Thurisaz represents the letters TH together (like th as in the) and is the rune of Thor. Its also symbolic of Giants (Thor was son of a Giant) and thorns. It can symbolize male sexuality and change in seemingly destructive ways.
Ansuz: Ansuz represents the letter A as well as the ancestral gods, specifically Odin. So its not surprise that Ansuz also symbolizes power and enthusiasm.
Raidho: Raidho represents the letter R as well as wagon and chariots. It symbolizes taveling and a journey
Kenaz: Kenaz represents C or K as well as being symbolic of creativity and passion.
(These first 6 runes is where we get the term Futhark from)
Gebo: Gebo represents G and is also the rune of gifts. It may be a sacrificial gift or a gift of generosity.
Wunjo: Wunjo represents W or V. If Wunjo is pulled one can expect a great deal of joy in the near future as well as feelings of ecstasy.
The next Ætt is known as Heimdall's Ætt
Hagalaz: Hagalaz represents H. It is also a rune that may seem negative. It represents wrath of nature and trials, but its through these things we can grow.
Nauthiz: Nauthiz represents N. It also is another rune that can symbolize growth through struggle. This rune tells us to face our fears, however distressing they may be.
Isa: Isa represent I. it also symbolizes a standstill and psychological barriers, like grief for example.
Jera: Jera is represents J or Y. It represents good harvests and the cycles related to nature and life.
Eihwaz: Eihwas represents EI as a combo of letters. it represents strength and trustworthiness
Perthro: Perthro represents the letter P. It is symbolic of all sorts of mysteries. Including those related to female sexuality.
Algiz: Algiz represents the letter Z or -R, its a protection rune and symbolizes the urge to protect many of us possess.
Sowilo: Sowilo represents the letter S. It symbolizes success, health and honor.
The final Ætt is Tyr's Ætt
Tiwas: Tiwas represents the letter T and is symbolic of justice, honor and leadership.
Berkano: Berkano represents the letter B. It is symbolic of birth, motherhood, fertility and personal growth.
Ehwaz: Ehwas represents the letter E. It is symbolic of transportation and a gradual move forward.
Mannaz: Mannaz represents the letter M and symbolizes the individual or the human race.
Laguz: Laguz represents the letter L. It also is symbolic of water, a source of fertility and a source of healing potential.
Ingwaz: Ingwaz represents the letters NG. It is a symbol of male fertility, gestation, family love and the home.
Dagaz: Dagaz represents the letter D and symbolizes a breakthrough, awareness or awakening.
Othala: Othala is the final rune, and it represents the letter O. It is symbolic of inherited property and what is important to someone.
